The Friday 5 p.m. Exodus: A Survival Diary
By Marc Aschoff ·
The week ends all at once. A warm, slightly frantic tour of the hour when a whole borough decides to leave at the same time.
There is a moment late on Friday afternoon when a Manhattan office changes its mind about itself. The keyboards get a little lighter. Someone announces they are "just going to pop out." A coat appears on a chair that, ten minutes ago, held only ambition.
This is a diary of that hour, kept by people who have watched it from the sidewalk many times.
3:30 p.m.: the first scouts
The earliest departures are always planned in advance and described as something else. A "dentist thing." A "quick errand." A suspiciously well-packed bag. The rest of the floor watches with the quiet respect one gives a person who has solved the week.
4:15 p.m.: the great email lull
Inboxes go oddly still. Nobody wants to be the person who sends a "quick question" that will not be answered until Monday. The few brave messages that do appear carry a hopeful sign-off like "no rush, have a great weekend," which translates roughly to "please do not reply."
4:50 p.m.: the lobby gets crowded
Ten minutes before the bell, everyone is already standing near the elevators with the posture of a sprinter. The doors open and a polite human avalanche begins. People who spent the week not speaking to each other exchange a warm, shared look that says: we made it.
5:00 p.m.: the sidewalk takes over
Step outside and the whole island is moving in the same direction at the same time. The avenues turn into rivers of tote bags and weekend plans. Rideshare apps blink in unison, a suspicious number of people discover they are late for dinner, and every crosswalk becomes a negotiation conducted entirely in eye contact.
5:20 p.m.: the late-stayers club
Every floor has a few people who stay, and they have a tone all their own. The overhead lights are dimmer, the hallway is quiet, and the cleaning crew arrives with a cart and a nod of mutual understanding. There is a particular peace in an empty office on a Friday evening, right up until someone remembers they promised to send a deck.
6:00 p.m. and beyond: the weekend gets its due
By now the sidewalks have thinned a little, the restaurants are full, and the city has quietly swapped one version of itself for another. The office, meanwhile, goes dark one floor at a time, ready to be switched back on Monday morning by whoever arrives first and finds the thermostat has opinions.
The Friday rule for anyone who runs an office
If you look after a floor, the quiet trick is to handle the small stuff before the exodus, not after it. Supplies that run out on Friday have a way of staying out until Monday, and Monday is already busy enough. A delivery that arrives before the weekend is one fewer thing to think about while you are standing on a platform, wondering about the train.
We deliver across the borough, and you can see which neighborhoods are on our route on the service areas page.
Our 5-gallon jugs are $13.00 per bottle, with $5.00 delivery per order and a 3-bottle minimum. When you are ready to cross it off the list, place an order here. Then go. The avenue is waiting.
